Rock Island Bridge Memorial Event Recalls Old Mississippi Crossing

The Rock Island railroad marks its seventieth anniversary of the first passenger train with a memorial tablet on the remaining Mississippi River bridge pier. Historic figures Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis aided the project, which faced river-traffic opposition and an injunction from Jefferson Davis as secretary of war. A long legal battle culminated in a 1862 Supreme Court ruling. A commemorative train to Joliet on October 10 will honor engineer Samuel B. Reed and the bridge’s early builders.
