Grand Allied talks in Washington weigh atomic bomb control amid Pacific clashes in Java and Egypt. Civilian passenger car tire production runs about 85 percent of demand and 30 percent below the 68 million casing monthly capacity. The four year backlog in tire demand persists with no near relief. Industry cites a need for at least 7,000 workers and predicts tires won’t be broadly available until late summer or early fall.
British Field Marshal Montgomery warned that without a central German administration treaty talks on Ruhr internationalisation and Rhineland detachment could worsen the country’s winter economy and spark trouble for occupying powers. He noted food and fuel shortages may heighten unrest as zones coordinate for material transfer and industry restoration. Also reported: veteran civil service placements total 95,000 in H1 1945, averaging 16,000 monthly, with rehiring of widows of World War II veterans and disabled veterans and widows of World War I veterans and disabled WWI veterans.
