Weather Brief Notes Corn Harvest Delayed by Rain
A Wednesday weather review records cloudy skies and rain with recent heavy showers. Prospects of a new Thursday forecasted as cooler and damp. Farmers report corn and soybeans delayed by moisture, with roughly a quarter of corn still in fields and large untapped soybean acreage. The storm in Cherokee disrupted telephone lines, leaving only the Storm Lake police radio as outside contact. A Cherokean well emitted sand instead of water, usable for polishing rusty machinery. The Gifford house in Grinnell changes hands, Mitchelman buying from Charles Gifford of Tahiti for 1, and a 25,000 gallon gas tank near Stuart was displaced by floodwater, with gas company plans to place it above ground. About 2,000 gallons of gas were in the tank at the time.

Diverse Local Notes Reflect Iowa Life and Oddities
A wide collage of Iowa items shows Alois Bernard farming without horses near Decorah while Mrs Bernard drives the tractor. Joseph near Protivin uses many horses. A Casey boy, Lonnie Morgan, rides a train sans ticket and is returned home by the Menlo agent. A Grinnell wedding shifts best man duties due to a minor accident. The Little Brown Church tale, campus lore at Mount Vernon, and a Bradford ghost town piece appear. An Iowa rail depot plan and a 80-acre Black Hawks County sale are noted alongside a turnip at Pulaski. Neon signs, storm window accidents, and distant library facts complete the miscellany.
