Graettinger approves electric franchise by 30 votes

In a special election on Monday Graettinger electors ratified a council action granting Northern Iowa Gas & Electric a city franchise. The tally was 96 for and 66 against with 162 votes cast. Prospects of turning on lights may occur by early May if equipment arrives and weather favors execution. Some opposed the 25 year term and preferred repairing the acetylene plant.

Twenty Years Ago in the Sherburn Bank Robbery

Readers recall the 1896 Sherburne bank robbery described in the Armstrong Journal. Two Kellihan brothers shot two men inside the bank, then fled on bicycles with money. Sheriff’s posse pursued across the state line. one brother died after being shot by a deputy, the other captured near Lake Mills.
