Registration has begun for a Thanksgiving drawing organized by Graettinger Ness people. On Monday November 24 at 4 p.m. a dozen ready to bake turkeys will be given away. Special drawing tickets are available at Graettinger businesses and at Graettinger Variety Store for those without tickets. Spin-off drawings are paused for November and December and will resume after the new year. Patrons may enter each time they visit a Graettinger business. Winners must be present when called.
The Task Force on Women and Social Security issued a report to the Senate Special Committee on Aging detailing inequities in Social Security. It notes that women workers and their dependents often receive lower or no benefits compared to men with similar contributions. It cites examples where a mother may receive survivor benefits when a father dies, but not the reverse, and where husbands cannot claim spousal benefits unless dependent. The report argues women’s taxes are frequently wasted as retirement benefits may be lower than what spouse benefits would provide. It also notes couples with equal earnings can net different benefits, and singles without dependents bear the same taxes as those with dependents.
