The editor urges voting with a growing eligible pool of about 650 and cites past turnouts of 505 registered in 1975 with 281 voting in November and 277 in the run-off. Local Pirates football sees multiple Masters family touchdowns this week while Halloween notes praise community behavior. a fire at Jerry Gunn's property is noted as a crime.
Greg Crowley reports the school administration urges parents to use a bus route calling tree when storms threaten schedules. A student on the route notifies the next person until the chain reaches contact 3 to prevent children from exposure to cold and rain. Arnold Miller, founder of the organization and a survivor, stresses the importance of dialogue after tragedy.
A bi monthly Birthday and Halloween gathering on October 27 hosted fifty two guests. Attendees dressed for the era and recalled tricks before modern trick or treat customs. Tales ranged from moved wagons and sideboards to a beaten path of pranks and a cow tied with a horse collar. A boy who confessed to a river bank prank was whipped, prompting a joke about George Washington and his cherry tree. Laughter was common throughout the day.
Vernon Township Charity Drive in Palo Alto County set for Monday November 7 from 9 to 11 a.m. solicitors will visit homes for contributions to Cancer Research Heart Research and several local groups. Last year’s drive raised 694 dollars and organizers urge 25 cents per family to cover all township expenses while the High Lake Get Together Club meets November 8 to make tray favors.
Funeral services for Mrs Ray Lillian Beatrice Wikert 74 were held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger. She died October 29 at Holy Family Hospital Estherville after three years of poor health. Born April 26 1903 in Lost bland Township she lived in Palo Alto County all her life. She married Raymond Wikert August 9 1922 in Emmetsburg. he died May 12 1971. Survivors include two sons Leo A Wikert Ankeny and Roland A Wikert Ringsted two daughters Ruth James Graettinger and Nona McLain LeMars two brothers Arthur Rasmussen Spirit Lake and Carl Rasmussen Ringsted two sisters Alma Clemenson Emmetsburg and Eda Clemenson Graettinger twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Pastor O J Reitz officiated. interment Valley View Cemetery. Preceded in death by her parents husband and sister Nora Sundahl. Pallbearers were David Clemenson Kenneth Jensen Lloyd Sundahl Erwin Wikert Darwin Rasmussen LeRoy Rasmussen.
