The Makers of the Flag and Flag Day Origins
A retrospective on the pledge of allegiance and the flag, tracing the origin of Flag Day to 1892 and 1910 actions. It highlights Francis Bellamy, Benjamin Harrison, Laura B. Prick, and Benjamin Altheimer, who promoted national patriotism, with Wilson’s 1916 proclamation making June 14 Flag Day. It notes Old Glory’s names and Key’s Star Spangled Banner.
