Value of Steer Manure May Spread Beef Profits

Ames report notes steer manure provides fertilizer value. Stewart Melvin of Iowa State says manure from a beef animal yields about 50 pounds of nitrogen 35 pounds of phosphorus and 40 pounds of potassium for steers weighing 600 to 1050 pounds. At current prices this is roughly $20 after nitrogen losses. Handling and spreading cost about $6 to $8 per animal in a 300 head unit. Losses from volatilization and runoff can be substantial with at least 30 percent waste-disposal loss. A nutrient analysis on a representative sample is recommended to estimate manure value.
