Community Honors Leona Leonard as Teaching Career Ends
Leona Leonard, Graettinger teacher with nearly 50 years in education, will be honored at a Sunday afternoon open house June 6 from 2 to 4 at Immaculate Conception parish center. She began teaching in 1922 at the Leonard school west of Graettinger and later taught at McCombs Lounsberry McConnell before joining Graettinger Community School in 1952. She is the daughter of the late C F Leonard and has lived with her brother Joe. siblings Gene and Jerrie also reside in Graettinger and Emmetsburg respectively. A Graettinger High School and Buena Vista College graduate with graduate work at State Teachers College Cedar Falls.

Japanese Teacher To Visit Graettinger Next Fall
The Graettinger Education Association will host a Japanese English teacher in Graettinger at the start of the new school year. The host family will be the Leland Stiles family. The visitor will study the American education system while here and will prepare by studying English at Fordham University in New York before arrival. The program is part of a national effort involving ISEA, the Council on International Educational Exchange, and Youth for Understanding to place 42 Japanese teachers in Iowa communities.

Riverside Club Meets Tuesday In Graettinger Area
The Riverside Club will meet Tuesday, June 1, at Idella Mammen’s home with Bessie Howard as co host. Rainy Start to Week Brings Welcome Crop Rain
It was rainy and cool the first of the week with about an inch of rain in the area Sunday. Graettinger’s gauge recorded .91 inches on Sunday, added to last week’s .92 inches, aiding early crop growth. Temperatures cooled to 42 at night Monday and 34 Wednesday morning.
