Eskimo sculptor Pangnerk at Expo 70 in Japan

A Padlei Eskimo, Pangnerk, carved at Expo 70 in Japan after surviving hunger and cold at Eskimo Point. The piece explores his life, artistry, and the clash between Arctic solitude and Expo bustle as he and fellow Eskimos adjust to crowds, trains, and urban Japan while creating wood etched images for the Canadian pavilion. Pangnerk’s laugh enduringly marks the tale of resilience among the Arctic people.
