Sweet Potatoes In Hatched To the Jowa Folk for Garden Growth
Rural gardening notes from Ora Smith at Iowa State College urge starting warm weather crops now. Plant half a peck of sweet potatoes in a hotbed to yield later, space slips closely without touching, cover with soil, water, and replace the sash. In four to five weeks slips will be ready. Also favor planting sweet corn, beans, cucumbers, and muskmelons early to beat summer heat. Golden Bantam corn, giant string beans, and Eden Gem melons are highlighted as strong varieties. Davis Perfect cucumbers are recommended, as are Pollock 10-26 melons for flavor.
