Watching Washington Q How much beef do we import

AP Sioux Center A. In 1974 we imported about 719 million pounds of beef veal and beef products from Australia and New Zealand which accounts for about two thirds of our total beef imports last year. With the bettering outlook in wholesale beef prices this year imports from these countries are up dramatically in January and February. In January imports from all countries accounted for the largest monthly total since October 1973 according to the USDA's Economic Research Service. When the beef market declines the level of imports follows suit. The great increase in imports we are seeing now can be attributed to higher prices and the thinning of herds kept on feed during last year's terrible market. Last year imports were down 20 percent and accounted for 7 percent of national beef consumption. Since 1972 imports of meat under the Meat Import Act of 1964 have been unrestricted due to suspension of import quotas by the President. Under that law imports of beef veal mutton and goat meats are restricted if they reach a trigger figure based on 110 percent of an adjusted base quantity. For 1975 the adjusted base quantity is 1074.3 million pounds and the trigger point is 1181.7 million pounds. The USDA estimates meat imports this year will reach 1150 million pounds 30 million below the trigger point. There are several proposals in Congress now designed to make imports more competitive with domestic beef. I believe that all beef products.

Farm bill debate heats as Butz loan rise proposal surfaces

Bedell challenged Secretary Butz remarks at the National Farm Editors meeting noting the administration could veto a House approved bill and raise loan levels by executive action. The House passed a measure setting corn loans at 1.87, target price 2.25, with higher wheat and cotton supports and milk premium adjustments, plus soybean lean program reinstatement. Bedell urged Ford to sign promptly.
