First Atlantic Flight Made Thirty Years Ago
Thirty years ago last June John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown completed the first nonstop Atlantic crossing from St Johns Newfoundland to Clifden Galway in 16 hours 57 minutes aboard a Vickers Vimy bomber with 1000 pounds overload. The feat opened the air age, earning knighthoods and a £40,000 prize from the London Daily Mail. Alcock later died in France and the Vimy is kept in London’s Science Museum.
