Seed Improvement Urged for 1844 Planting in Palo Alto
Iowa State agronomists urge farmers to plant disease and weed resistant seed adapted to local conditions. Soybeans offer at least 2 bushels per acre gain with area suited varieties and proven practices, including closer spacing, seed inoculation, and weed control. Oats may yield 12 to 15% more with new varieties such as Tama and Con trol. Corn gains come from 4 kernels per hill on rich soils, while seed testing guides planting rates. Germination results vary for oats, with some samples as low as 28% and others near 98%. Farm Bureau notes oat germination tests for March 24 were planted, with results due by March 31 and April 1 for local farmers.
