Experiments Show Alfalfa and Oats Substitutions for Work Horses

Dr Campbell oversaw a four hour session at Fort Riley testing grains and hays as horse feed. Fifteen rations fed to 937 horses over 140 days showed oats best for work horses but corn with alfalfa matched oats at lower cost. Alfalfa hay provided superior roughage, reducing daily ration cost by 25 to 40 percent. Soldiers maintained strict weights and measurements throughout. This confirms earlier Kansas Agriculture Secretary F D Colburn on alfalfa feeding.
