P J McCarty protests a proposed 800000 bond for paved roads in Palo Alto County urging voters to consider tax burdens and current real estate struggles. He cautions against funding a joyride road and notes Emmetsburg to Graettinger surfacing promises. Also reports Graettinger city election details and new Osgood post office opening.
Mrs. B H Horswell advertises another shipment of hats to be shown at her home this Friday and Saturday. Prices are reasonable and interested buyers should call to view.
Teachers and pupils at Grachtinger High School will take their Easter break a week early due to the late-date Easter. Students voiced no objections to the early vacation as the regular spring break is moved to next week.
A two weeks Lenten evangelistic meeting starts Tuesday April 8 at the M. E. church. Rev. A. A. Howe of Torriland and Rev. Dr. Robert Chipperfield of Estherville will assist the pastor. Cordial invitation extended to all.

Carl Frederick Gotleib Dahlke, longtime Emmatsburg resident, died suddenly at his daughter Mrs. Fred J. Moltz’s home in Broadland South Dakota on Saturday March 16. Born February 1 1837 in Krels Stateen Germany he was 87 years 1 month and 14 days old. He married in 1867 and emigrated to the United States in 1882 settling in Chicago then Emmnetaburg before farm life near Graettinger. He and his wife had nine children, with survivors listed. Funeral held in Broadland, burial there.
The deceased is survived by his companion, now 82, and by a large family of sons and daughters. He was an honest upright citizen, thrifty and industrious, who raised a splendid family. The writer knew few in the area but Graettinger people acquainted with the family will mourn his passing. The notice extends sincere sympathy to his loving sons and daughters and his aged devoted wife.
Iver A Helvig died at home in Ruthven on Saturday March 16 after several weeks illness. Funeral services were held March 18 at 11 00 a m at the Lutheran church with Rev Wigdahl and at 2 00 p m at the Lost Island township church with Rev Sunde, burial in Lost Island cemetery. Born in Bergin Norway on April 1 1645 he was 78 years 11 months and 15 days old. He came to America in 1866 settling first at Grand Mound Iowa, married Ingeborg Johnson in 1868 and had eleven children, seven living. He lived in Story County near Roland before moving to Lost Island township then Ruthven, later living in Ruthven. His first wife died in 1892 and he married Mrs Herborg Iverson Hagneraas of Bergen Norway in 1907. He sold his farm in 1913 and moved to Ruthven where he resided until his death. He was a reliable, devout Lutheran and cherished by friends and family for his honesty and thrift. He was a benefactor to many and his memory will be cherished by a large circle of friends.
A cream improvement meeting will be held Wednesday April 2 at 11 a.m. at the Hawkeye theatre in Graettinger. Speakers include Prof Martinzon of Ames and T L Clarke of West Bend. Palo Alto County Agent Clarke will also speak. A cream scoring contest may be decided for the coming season.
Auctioneers and clerks in charge of recent market sales urge buyers to settle accounts. Most items are small and require time to balance. buyers are asked to call and complete payments.
Social dance at Woodman hall on Thursday April 8 with Hemp's Orchestra of Milford providing music. Tickets at usual price. An invitation to all. Also lunch and supper provided by the M. E. Ladies Aid Society in the Woodman hall dining room Monday evening election night. Public invited.
Theo Jacobson of Jewell visited the locality last week to oversee commercial interests and attend to local business matters.
