Fire causes $6000 loss in Ringsted building
A Friday 1 am blaze between the ceiling and floor near Dr. Brown's office in Ringsted caused about $6000 damage. The fire spread through papered partitions, gutted upstairs offices, and was confined to the building with walls mostly intact. Insurance covered most losses for Drs. Peterson and Brown and the Ringsted Drug Company, traced to a defective flue.

Pruning Advice for Old Wood in Grape Vines
Horticulturists at Iowa State College warn against leaving too much old wood when pruning grape vines. Wood from 1922 would fruit in 1923 and should be pruned in spring 1924 to two buds. New wood grown in 1928 would fruit in 1924 and should be pruned in 1925 to two buds. Guidance emphasizes cutting back to the main cane and removing last year’s canes for better fruiting.

Pruning guidance for fruit canes and buds
Agricultural instructions advise that four canes should show about forty buds if vigorous. Tines should resemble a lead pencil in width. Excess canes must be pruned back to within two buds of the main stem to promote growth for next year’s fruit. The strongest canes are kept to bear fruit.
