Prune Out the Old Wood in Grape Vines, Experts Say
Horticulturists at Tawa State College warn that leaving old wood causes trouble in pruning neglected grape vines. Buds from 1922 wood will fruit in 1923 and should be pruned back in spring 1924 to two buds, while growth from 1928 wood bears in 1924 and should be pruned in 1925 to two buds. For best yield, cut back old wood near the main stem, removing about four tons of last year’s wood.
