Graettinger High wrestlers honored from 1981 undefeated team

A long preserved photo recalls Graettinger High School’s standout wrestling era from 1929 to 1938 and the 1981 undefeated team. Names include Gene Duffy center, Bernard Doerning a state champion, Kermit Reeves, Donald Jones, and coach Dunmire, among others. Several listed wrestlers served or perished in wartime conflicts.

Park Association To Hold Annual Meeting Monday

Graettinger Park Association stock holders will meet Monday evening March 21 at 8 p m in the Legion hall. Baseball and softball plans for the coming season will be discussed. Officers to be elected, financial reports read, and other business on the agenda. Coffee and cake served after the meeting.

John Cody 61 Cylinder Resident Dies After Illness

John Cody aged 61 of Cylinder died Friday morning in Emmetsburg after a three week illness following a heart attack. Funeral services were held Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg with Rev. C. H. Johnson and Rev. Norman Nelson officiating. Burial was at St. John's Cemetery near Cylinder. He lived his life in Palo Alto County except for brief work periods in Centerville and Pocahontas. He managed Baker Lumber Co. in Cylinder for 12 years and previously farmed locally. He was Fairfield township assessor for 12 years. He was born February 12, 1894, married Theresa September 1, 1917, and is survived by his wife, two sons Palmer and James, one grandson Robert, two brothers Arthur and Melvin, and other relatives. his parents and some siblings preceded him in death.

Graettinger Bucks Prize Winners Named in Draw

In Graettinger three residents won weekly prize money from the Wednesday drawing. Mrs. Bert Anderson claimed a $10 award, Mrs. Don Graettinger won $15, and Nels Nelson took the jackpot prize. Mrs. Melvin Bratrud did not claim the other $100 jackpot.

Baxter Reelected Member at Large on County Education Board

William N. Baxter of Mallard retained his Palo Alto county education board seat defeating William Thomas of Emmetsburg 867 to 625. It was the only county level contest on the ballot.

Ringsted Names Postmaster Thelma Godfredsen

The U S Senate confirmed the appointment of Mrs Thelma Godfredsen as Ringsted postmaster. She has been acting postmaster for some time and confirmation came via Rep James I Dolliver of Fort Dodge representing the sixth district.

Former School Teacher Dies in St. Paul

Mrs. Haya Zaun 53, formerly Frances Hays, died recently in St. Paul from a malignant brain tumor after a prolonged illness. Daughter of Thaddeus and wife of the Graetfinger High area, she taught speech and English in St. Paul high schools and earlier Graetfinger High School, remembered by local residents.

Negro Tenor To Present Concert Here

George Matthews a Negro tenor from Bristol Tennessee will present a sacred concert at Grachtinger Methodist church next Monday evening March 21. He was to perform last October but canceled due to illness. The public is invited to attend. his voice and interpretations are praised as extraordinary. A free will offering will be taken. program features Negro spirituals and ballads. The concert begins at 8 p m Sunday evening.

Officials of the Graettinger Community club announce the signing of Geo. B. Nelson shows rides and concessions for the annual Labor Day celebration on Sept. 1. The Nelson shows are well known here and have appeared for several years. They could not appear last year. Byers Bros. were secured for that year.

Masters Elected Director and District Mergers Reported

Voters in Emmet county Iowa elected Elmer Masters to the Graettinger Consolidated district board, unseating Ed Herke, with 131 votes to 41. Dwayne Summers and Oral Bonstead were reelected treasurer and county board of education member. A merger creating a 97 square mile Community School district with High Lake township passed 225 to 10, forming part of Palo Alto county's system.

Paul Bonstead Named Third FFA Future Farmer of the Month

Paul Bonstead vice president of Graettinger F R A and high school junior was chosen as the third Future Farmer of the Month at the EVFA executive meeting. He has been active three years in FFA with livestock judging and parliamentary procedure honors, led conservation, and earned state and district awards. He also excels in athletics, music, student government, and 4H, maintaining a B average and planning college after graduation in 1956.
