A Vernon Graettinger and Walnut township turnout attended a high school defense bond program Friday evening. Supt. Girsch chaired entertainment, G J Stillman led the speaking portion, with Atty A W Smith and A H Piper presenting on emergency demand and bond financing. Performances included Remember Pearl Harbor by Telen Smith and other vocal acts. Mrs. McClain’s group sang. the audience joined in the Star Spangled Banner. The event aimed to inform the public about the defense bond campaign starting March 9 and lasting for years.

J. M. McNew of west Graettinger was badly burned when steam backfired while thawing pipes on a milking machine. His eyes were swollen shut for two days and his facial skin scorched though expected to heal in a week or two. The incident narrowly avoided permanent injury and possible blindness.

Ruthven Scouts Sell 11 Tons of Waste Paper for Defense
Scout Master Bolden Weikel reports Ruthven Boy Scouts have gathered and sold 22,490 pieces of waste paper and cardboard since November 29, 1941. The paper was delivered to the Quaker Oats elevator at Emmetsburg, earning $153 used to buy Boy Scout and Cub Scout uniforms.

Mr and Mrs Paul McNew and daughter arrived from Los Angeles Monday morning at three o clock. They left Los Angeles Saturday morning. Mr McNew had been employed in a large airplane factory or gave up his position. Living costs are very high and the few days work each week does not produce much revenue. Auto Crash North of Chappell Injures Five
Mrs. Aasonson fractured leg and Frank Herke dislocated thumb in a Friday auto crash ten miles north of Chappell Nebraska. Both vehicles damaged on a slippery road with skidding. C A Selee Dies at 71 in Emmetsburg Area
C A Selee, 71, died Saturday night at Emmetsburg hospital after long illness. A Graettinger native, he worked as a carpenter and contractor, supervised Hawkeye Theatre construction, and spent most of his life in Iowa. Survived only by distant relatives, his funeral was held Monday at Graettinger Methodist Church with Rev. W G Bohi officiating. Burial followed at the cemetery east of Graettinger. Funeral arrangements were by Martin Funeral Service, Graettinger.
