Practical seed bed prep for oats crop

Oats follow cultivated crops and do well on fall plowed land or seed beds created by disking and harrowing. Early seeding is advised and two diskings plus harrowing prepare a firm 2 to 3 inch surface. Drill sowing gives even stands and higher yields than broadcasting, with optimal depths 0.5 to 1 inch, deeper in sandy soils. Use local, well cleaned seed, test germination if last year was wet, and sow about 2.5 to 3 bushels per acre in the corn belt, less in the Great Plains. adjust by seed quality and bed condition.
