New Chemicals Offer Longer Lasting Plant Protection
An entomologist at Michigan State College, H. R. Hoffman, reports promising tests on organophosphorus systemics that travel within plants to kill pests when they feed or chew. Systemics, discovered during WWII, last longer than traditional insecticides but are more dangerous to humans. Only two systemics are USDA approved: schradan for mites and thrips, and demeton for mites and aphids on cotton and fruit trees, with potatoes approved.
