Don Moran, first to tee off at Hillcrest on Sunday June 8, leaped a fence to retrieve a ball and broke his ankle on the second hole. He finished the round and later X rays confirmed the fracture. He is driving about town awaiting healing.
The Lost Island Protective Association held a June 15 meeting at Ruthven Senior Citizens Center. Members reviewed nine months of progress including incorporation, a railroad crossing repair petition, establishment of the Lost Island Sanitary District, a federal grant for a lake area study, and ongoing talks with the Iowa State Conservation Commission on fish and waste handling. An election elected seven board members and officers, with Carl Peterson as president and Cap Jones as vice president. Attendance included state rep Don Spencer and district sanitarian Dave Gottsche who outlined district procedures. Proposals included public pay phones, a Fourth of July Parade of Boats, volunteer help to the conservation commission, and a lakes patrol for peak boating times. The group lauded Spencer and Gottsche for support and planned a June 22 board meeting to chart the coming year and set a membership meeting date.
Petitions for Graettinger Board of Education seats available from secretary R T Naae July 6 through 5 p m July 31. Filing returns to Naae. Election set for September 9 with two seats up for three year terms held by Ralph Graettinger and Arlin Kulow.
Julia Graettinger daughter of Mr and Mrs Edwin Graettinger will walk for diabetes at a camp for diabetics. The group plans a walk-a-thon on June 24 with campers ages 8 to 16 seeking sponsors. Each donor sets their own per mile pledge to support education and research.
