The Graettinger First Lutheran church marked its 50th by a weekend program with Rev. Bergsaker and Rev. Sande delivering sermons. Greetings from founders and neighboring pastors highlighted the celebration along with historical notes of the church’s origin, construction, and past pastors.
The first Graettinger band concert of the summer, led by A H Shaver and Kenneth Barringer, is sponsored by local business men to keep the school band active. Practice for the band occurs Mondays at 7 30 p m at the high school, with former members urged to join for the season and bring instruments amid scarce band equipment. The current plan runs until a school band leader is hired.
A Labor Day meeting is set for City Hall Tuesday at 1 30 p m to plan the 1942 Labor Day celebration the 46th in Grachtinger. Community business men and citizens are urged to attend despite fewer young men in service. The tradition will continue until the war ends.
In the regular June auxiliary meeting held Tuesday evening officers were elected: Helen Potter president Verona Nielsen vice president Idella Fleming secretary Jennie Fleming historian Swenson chaplain Pistorian Brisse or sergeant at arms The president named auditing committee Mabel Henning Sen Margaret Lancaster Leta Me Combs Hostesses were Esther Simonsen Mary Duus and Mae Suss
At the Legion meeting Tuesday evening new officers were elected for the ensuing year. Karl Nielsen is commander with F W Christiansen as vice commander Frans Swanson adjutant Fred Graettinger finance officer Art Henningsen sergeant at arms Oscar Johnson historian A H Cameron chaplain. Installation will be at the regular July meeting.
An explosion of unknown origin nearly demolishes the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Niewendorp in Sheldon after Mrs. Niewendorp struck a match to burn papers in the furnace. She is seriously burned and cut as walls and floors are torn loose and the front porch collapses.
The Times extends greetings to the First Lutheran church in Graettinger on its milestone in local church history. The message wishes success for the congregation’s future and notes the event occurred in 1942 with pastor Masted present.
Graettinger community members vote to stop Sunday morning openings. Beginning June 21 stores will close on Sundays to ease work for managers and staff. Citizens and ministers urge planning weekend shopping on Saturdays and supporting local merchants.
Rev and Mrs Mandsager and children arrived from Big Sandy Montana to attend the fiftieth anniversary program of the First Lutheran church in Graettinger. He previously served the local church 15 years and now pastors three parishes with a monthly mountain parish duty. They planned a Minneapolis trip for a church convention and will visit Kenyon Minnesota before returning to Graettinger late June.
Text describes grain bins in Graettinger being torn down and shipped to Kansas for wheat storage. Bins from northwest town sent to the Sunflower state. trucks return with wheat. Wheat shipments grow in the area, with Jorgen Andersen of Farmers Grain Co. reporting two cars of wheat moved here and expecting more to Graettinger.
Aged 3 Teddy Thoreson swallowed a quantity of kerosene this morning while playing in the garage. Prompt treatment was given and he is resting in bed this afternoon, recovering nicely. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett Thoreson.
Karl Rasmussen son of Mrs Ag ness Rasmussen left Saturday for Buffalo New York to report for military service He recently enlisted in the U S armed forces Mrs Rasmussen accompanied him to Chicago for a brief visit with relatives
The report notes warm June weather with frequent rain and sticky conditions. Vegetation across the area is growing splendidly, benefiting from the wet and warm spell spell of yesterday and today.
Peter Jorgensen underwent a surgical operation at Mayo Hospital Rochester on Morday 2. Hospital officials report he is recovering nicely.
Mrs. Wm. Galleger of Ruthven is ill at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. A. Fisher in Emmetsburg. She fell ill while visiting there.
Mike Eidsness aged near 88 and his son L M arrived from Washington DC by train Saturday. He attended Graettinger First Lutheran church’s fiftieth anniversary and earlier helped build the church in 1897. The family, once based in Graettinger, now holds positions in Washington and Strives in public service.
Emmet Best son of Mrs. Clarence Clemmiensen Gravitinger recently passed the Iowa bar examination and is now an attorney. The Times extends congratulations and wishes Mr Best success in the legal profession.
Mrs EB W Shipman formerly Ann Craven underwent surgical operation at a St. Louis hospital this week. She is quite ill and her mother Mrs Oscar Craven left Waterloo to be with her. Local friends hope for her early and complete recovery.
Much coal is being delivered to Graettinger homes this week and several cars of coal were delivered last month. Every coal user with storage space should buy his coal this month.
The local school currently lists two vacancies starting immediately for a band instructor and a science teacher. Applicants are urged to apply promptly as positions remain unfilled.
Market notes from Graettinger dated Thursday June 11 1942 list egg receipts at 28 cents and 26 cents for trade and straight run eggs. Butter price shown as State Brand. Poultry values include heavy hens 6 pounds and over at 16 to 18 cents per pound and Leghorn Springs 2 pounds and over at 16 cents. heavy springs at 18 cents.
Ted McCarty received orders from the navy to report for training at Notre Dame University no later than July 6. He had joined the naval reserve a year ago and is allowed to finish his second year of law at Creighton. After training he will be assigned to sea duty.
The Whiteside family will move from Graettinger to Hot Springs South Dakota on July 1 transferring residence from J P Conway to the Mrs Whiteside home. Shirley Whiteside recently graduated from Graettinger high school and the family expresses regret at leaving the community for opportunities in education and life in their new location.
Leland Knutsen reports a full brown deer seen Wednesday morning in a pasture west of Graettinger chased by milch cows. The animal, possibly the same one spotted near Graettinger all winter and on the Olen Anderson farm near Mud Lake, remains a curious local topic.
Graettinger residents joined Emmetsburg attendees for the first solemn high mass celebrated by Rev. William Steil, newly ordained, a son of John and Mrs. Steil of Emmetsburg and cousin of Mrs. Frank Elsenbast. The Times extends congratulations for his priestly call.
Arnold Richardson, described as an expert electrician and radioman, left Gradlinger for Omaha on Tuesday morning to begin a civilian course preparatory to joining the army. He believed he would be sent to Aberdeen, South Dakota, for training after leaving Gradlinger.

Graettinger Times to publish a municipal light plant special edition on June 25 1942 featuring plant history town officials and open house events with free coffee doughnuts and prize drawings registering visitors at 9 PM committee members listed and ads for the issue urged with deadlines June 22 for content and June 27 open house.
The Civil Service Commission announces a large need for men and women to be trained for radio work in the U S Signal Corps. Jobs include Mechanic Learner at 1020 a year with no experience and Junior Repairman Trainee at 1440 a year with prior radio experience. Applicants may be drafted or in the Enlisted Reserve. civilian status maintained during training. Ages 4 to 60. Information available at post offices, U S Employment Service, or Eighth U S Civil Service District in St Paul Minnesota.
Young men ages 16 to 19 may join the Naval Reserve Class V-1 while continuing college at their own expense. The program allows at least two, up to four years of college study toward becoming an aviation officer or deck and engineering officer. Enlist in V-1 now at the Navy Recruiting Station in Spencer, Clay County Court House, Spencer, Iowa.
A farm blaze at John B. DeMichelis's property near Chariton destroyed five buildings after a spark from a chimney. John DeMichelis narrowly escaped death when a tractor he was driving overturned while he tried to save gasoline. He was pinned and suffered a serious arm injury. Twenty-two years earlier, on the same day, lightning struck the DeMichelis barn.
