Flower Rock Display At Carl Spies Home
Carl Spies of Graettinger keeps a long running flower and rock display at his home begun by his late wife over 25 years ago. The sandstone and mica rock fireplace and borders use material hauled from Crippen corner during highway work. Spies, 87, emigrated from Germany in 1892 and ran a city meat market with brother Fred before selling it 25 years ago. The well built house dates to 1900 and trees were all planted by Carl. He invites visitors to view the garden from the road given its secluded location. Spies has five children living in Emmetsburg Mayville Hope North Dakota Pasadena California and West Point North Dakota.
