The fox squirrel is Iowa’s largest, weighing up to three pounds, with gray and red varieties also found. Black squirrels occur in Webb, Aurelia, and Rembrandt. white variants appear occasionally. They favor hollow trees or high leaf nests, may invade attics, and are discouraged by sealing entry holes. Favorite foods include corn, walnuts, acorns, and nut seeds. Keeping wild squirrels as pets is illegal. Squirrels breed annually. hunting yields a small harvest each season, aiding nature observation. The population remains healthy as long as woodlots and food sources persist.
