The Graettinger Chautauqua opened yesterday drawing attendees from the city and nearby areas. The program features local talent and a page later in the issue lists more acts. Christiansen and Conrad Brek returned home Tuesday after longer military service, चर्च. Branagan flew a seaplane over the city during Saturday celebrations, with the government officer piloting many trips.
Jack Dempsey delivers a stunning July Fourth victory over Jess Willard with a brutal first round, Willard unable to rise after the count is stopped at six as backers concede. Kossuth and Clay counties set votes on a pending proposition this month.
One of the last state celebrations, Emmetsburg hosted a homecoming for Palo Alto County soldiers Friday and Saturday. Rain reduced Friday attendance but Saturday drew record crowds. Highlights included the Lioo Hippodrome circus on South Broadway and a Great Lakes government plane as a notable attraction. Emmetsburg won Friday’s ball game against Ayrshire and Mallard defeated Emmetsburg Saturday. The Emmetsburg band provided music both evenings. the event was praised as the county’s finest celebration.
Professor J J Wilson of Iowa State College leads a state wide barberry eradication program. Aimed at eliminating the harmful shrub, the plan excludes only the largest cities from last year’s work. By May 1, 1919, 21 264 bushes were found, with broad local cooperation and only one remonstrance among 360 notices.
The Times reports Wm. Axelton suffered severe facial injuries three months ago while cranking a large engine at his irrigation pipe factory in Continental Arizona. His jaw was shattered and all teeth in the lower jaw were knocked out. He traveled to New Orleans for specialist treatment and hopes to leave this week. Friends at Gracttinger regret the accident. The Manhattan hotel on West Oko boji will not open this season.
Mr and Mrs Franke O Neil of Gradinger were in Matherville when the 420 Chisago passenger train struck their car at the tower crossing. Mrs O Neil suffered a broken ankle, while Mr O Neil was uninjured. They blamed no train crew and described limited visibility and a slow crossing. The car was propelled by the impact and overturned, with Mrs O Neil thrown over a fence. The train stopped and rescuers sent them to the station. Mrs O Neil is recovering. the injury is serious but not life threatening. The incident is reported by Dstherville Enterprise.
Calfskins once again rise in price as American packers in Chicago report a new record sale at 80 cents a pound for untrimmed skins weighing 8 to 16 pounds. New York trimmed skins see stronger bids with prices up 25 to 40 cents, with leading grades quoted at 7 to 9 dollars per skin. A Cincinnati carload of choice Ohio hides sells at 45 cents a pound, signaling broad strength in cow hides.
Over the past week John Bondhus and Louis Thorson were named owners of a 400 acre tract one mile west of Dolliver in Emmet County. The Pierson Land Agency arranged the sale with a consideration of 200 dollars per acre, described as a bargain at the price.
An unfortunate traveler found three tires stolen from a Chevrolet north of Lel yard Wriday evening. He awoke next morning to learn a thief had visited the car tightening the remaining tire but left it, deeming it not in first class condition.
Tuesday morning Martin Myhre photographed the road east of town assessing its condition. Several views show Dr. Hession’s war in the middle of the lake and one image captures a machine splashing water like a seaplane.
Small town residents in Tama County defeated a paving proposition. County officials hope the federal government will compel paving of the Lincoln Highway through the county. The piece contains misread phrases and a proverb paraphrase about a worthwhile man who can smile when all else is gone.

The road show will continue through the year and drew 11 500 visitors in the first four days.
Leland Laughlin remains in Germany with the occupation army at Mundenbach about 200 kilometers from Coblenz, reporting a Rhine trip to Cologne and noting comfort, some entertainment, and longing to return home. He earned two wound stripes, four overseas stripes, and a bravery citation after being gassed and wounded in France. He was eighteen last December and entered service just after war began at age 16, landing overseas June 14, 1917, with over two years in France.
Jones County near Monticello yields valuable fossil corals and related sea forms washed from rocks by spring rains. Prof. A C Thomas of the University of Iowa notes the fossils in Jones County may take years to catalog, with specimens already shipped to the British Museum and other museums worldwide. About 6,000 American infantry and auxiliary troops will stay with the forces on the Rhine as other divisions head home. The First division, the first to cross the Atlantic, will be the last to sail back. Leland Laughlin, Ray Trousch and Tank Sullivan of Grad linger are members of this division.

He has spent 18 years in railroading and plans to pursue new business opportunities on the ground floor in Canada.
Take-all infection spreads through Mailison County Illinois fields causing dwarf sickly plants with bluish green color. It may cover whole fields or patches and often persists in soil and on seed. infected plants break at the crown and form weak suckers or white fruitless heads. Hogs sold Thursday at $22 per hundred on the Chicago market, marking another high in a soaring market. The price level underscores continued demand and sharp gains for hog producers this week.
Port. George Rauhauser of Wallingford and Miss Anna Josephine Hauge of Emmetsburg wed on Wednesday evening June 21. Rev. Voorhies officiated and the couple will reside in Wallingford. The bride, well known locally, recently moved to Emmetsburg with her parents. the groom is new to Graettinger but highly regarded in his home community.
