Axis armies faced resistance as Egypt defends key territories in the Middle East. A Nazi spy ring was busted in the Canal Zone, while Allied wheat pooling aid reached famine areas, aiding relief efforts amid ongoing wartime pressures.
In Egypt a 475 to 25 majority backed Prime Minister Winston Churchill after debate over the Libyan defeat. British imperial forces reinforced from the Middle East struck Rommel’s Axis flank and rear as U S and Royal Air Forces launched a large air offensive in the eastern Mediterranean. In Ben Gazi, hundreds of bombers hit munition dumps and equipment as reinforcements arrived.
Vice Chairman Howard L. Vickery of the maritime commission announced that 66 vessels totaling 731,900 deadweight tons were delivered in June. Production was speeding toward a monthly target of 900,000 dwt. In the first half of 1942 American shipyards delivered 288 ships about 2,544,000 dwt.
President Roosevelt revealed to Congress that secret emergency funds from June 1940 totaled 239.5 million dollars. Eighty seven percent went to the army navy maritime commission and Federal Loan agency. Major items included 52 million for secret naval bases in the Western hemisphere 12 million for Australian wool for uniforms 8 million for transport development in Latin America and 36.5 million for merchant ship construction.
The navy department announced completion of a giant operating base at Londonderry to guard Britain’s western approaches. Capt. Wilmer J. Larson was assigned to command the strategic post as hundreds of American workers are revealed to have begun work there last summer before U S entry into the war.
United States Caribbean defense command arrested 20 alleged Axis agents in a spy network aimed at refueling submarines and feeding critical shipping data. A Northwestern National Life Insurance study shows American workers’ paychecks up 34 percent since 1939 while living costs rose 13 percent, giving a net gain of 21 percent. A typical wage earner’s family has about $80 more per month now.
