The Times announces the closing date for a popular girl voting contest on February 21 1911. Votes have counted slowly but will accelerate as the grand prize a mahogany Clarendon upright piano arrives on display at D M Themp. Voters are urged to subscribe or pay arrears to support their candidate and cast votes at the First National Bank.
Warren arrested Arthur Beatty on a complaint by Jonni Barber of Himmat township for stealing four skunk hides. While en route to jail Beatty escaped, chased through the park by Deputy Warner. Near the courthouse Warner fell behind. Beatty eluded capture and remains at large. Eastherville Democrat reports the incident as a joke by the county sheriff's office.
About fifty friends gathered at the Spies home to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs B R Graettinger. The afternoon involved social chat and a delightful repast. The couple were presented with silver knives and forks.
Mrs Gilbertson died at her daughter Mrs John Morrica Tuesday Jan 17 at 2 pm. She would have been 80 in February after a brief illness. Ray Ackre of Estherville preached the funeral sermon and interment will be beside her husband in the church cemetery. Deceased leaves five daughters. two attended the funeral. Sympathy offered to the family.
The marriage of Mr. Nuls Osher to Miss Winnisa was held at So'clovic on Tugeday January 17 with immediate family present. Rev. Kaho and WinterStain officiated. Miss Ide Osher and Mr. Woyd Boone attended. The couple departed Wednesday for Traer for their honeymoon while relatives remain in town.
Last Thursday J P Johnson who lives two miles east of Langdon suffered severe burns when a five gallon can of gas exploded as he started a new gas engine. He attempted to pour in more fuel from the can without realizing a fire had started. The blast burned his hands face and clothing. Johnson managed to dive into a snowbank which saved him as the engine burned.
A historical item notes the contracted payments to clergy undertaker doctor and editor for obituary notices cards of thanks and lodge resolutions. The editor faces limits on inserting poetry and thanks while collecting fees, revealing the fading tradition of public acknowledgments in print.
Miss Anna Bergum arrived Friday from Lake Park and stayed through Monday visiting her parents and friends in Graettinger. She teaches in the second primary department at Lake Park and plans to pursue extended courses in primary work in another city.
