In a small town hospital last week two sisters in law, Mrs. Ted Leduc and Mrs. Vincent Leduc, were admitted for surgery at the same time and ended up in the same room under the same doctor. Neither knew the other’s plans until their pleasant coincidence became a shared moment.
The meager 170 votes cast in the recent city election prompts estimates of Graettinger’s eligible voters ranging from 300 to 600. In 1941 the special city election on the municipal right plant saw 277 yes and 208 no for one issue and 258 yes and 151 no for trustees, with Bond issue votes suggesting at least 485 eligible voters and possibly the town’s heaviest turnout. Glenn Shaver and Jorgen Andersen recall about 492 votes cast in 1941 amidst over 500 eligible voters, a peak noted nearly 12 years earlier.
Five month old Tommy Jacobson of Ottosen spent Christmas Day in an unusual manner as he underwent an emergency appendectomy after falling ill on Christmas Eve.

Interest shown in Emerson Red Clover available from Ames at 65 cents per pound FOB Ames. Orders fill as received with a minimum forty pounds per buyer, payment by remittance to the Committee for Agricultural Development. Emerson strain praised for winter hardiness, forage yield, seed production, traced to 1927 Iowa trials. Also reports the County Holstein Association meeting on January 21 in Emmetsburg and observations on baby beeves and winter farm projects.
The 4-H Western Lamb Show and Sale will be held in Spencer on Saturday January 17. Palo Alto will enter seven pens in the show. Club leaders and members interested in lambs are welcome to attend by 9 a.m. to view the full show grading, individual show and sale.
Training for 4-H leaders and county committee members will be held at Emmetsburg High School lunch room starting 10 a.m. Saturday January 17. County Women's Committee meets January 19 at 1:00 p.m. in the extension office. Mrs. Fred A. Brown reports county reading totals for 1941-52 by township: Vernon 00 readers, 698 books. Walnut 31 readers, 290 books. Ellington 14 readers, 642 books. Nevada 14 readers, 240 books. Lost Island 13 readers.
In Silver Lake 282 books were read by 16 readers, Booth 227 by 16, Fern Valley 88 by 6, Emmietsburg 86 by 12, Fairfield 70 by 6, West Bend 69 by 10, Independence 65 by 8, and others totaling 2,638 books by 163 readers in 12 township clubs. Top adult readers include Wanda Kerr of Walnut township with 101 books and Tom B Naig of Vernon with 44. Top 4 H participants feature Cleo Rouse and Donna Clarken with 40 each, Patricia Lufkin with 40, and David Naig with 85. Awards pending. clubs urged to review results and ensure reporting. Participants should read four Farm Bureau titles plus two personal picks. two condensed versions allowed.
