Mild New Year weather opens 1962 with near freezing highs and below zero mornings. Graettinger leaders reorganize with T Peterson as mayor and new council members. Pirates edge Emmetsburg 49 46 in a tight basketball finish as Park Norris lead in scoring and rebounds. Weather turns sleet and snow with subzero temps. Local weddings include Marlys Westergard and Lowell G Kiehl, plus several other marriages listed. Also reports of military arrivals, civilian status changes, and a 1922 blizzard note with school sports results.
Graettinger Girls Fall Twice in Basketball Tournaments
Graettinger girls, labeled the Pirettes, lost 76-65 to West Bend and 54-53 to Ayrshire in back to back games on December 17 and 18. Barb Petersen led scoring with 31 against West Bend, while West Bend’s Barber exploded for 42. In the Ayrshire game Graettinger led late but Ayrshire pulled away in the final seconds as Sue Kassel hit the winning shot. The Graettinger B team also defeated Ringsted.

Palo Alto farmer named to county ASC committee
Joe A. Lynch, a Palo Alto County farmer, was named to the County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation ASC Committee by delegates at the county convention held Saturday December 18 1971. Lynch was chosen as Chairman with Robert L. Neary as Vice Chairman, and John Nolan and Olaf Norland as first and second electorate committeemen. The officers take office January 1 1972.
