Slower Hog Population Growth Seen For 1955
United States agriculture officials forecast a smaller rise in hog numbers in 1955 due to lower hog prices and a less favorable corn hog ratio. They expect some increase to continue into 1956, noting 12 percent more hogs on farms in 1954 than 1953 and a spring hog rowing rise. Total hog slaughter in 1955 may exceed 1954 by about 5 million head, remaining well below 1952’s peak, with early winter slaughter up slightly and spring slaughter up 10 to 18 percent compared with 1954.
