Thieves raid a Montgomery County liquor store taking twelve cases of medium priced liquor while leaving expensive brands. In Eagle Grove Dr EB Johnson becomes a hobby railroad man, converting his basement laundry and furnace room into a miniature Chicago and Northwestern system with five trains in operation.
Bathervilley Daily News reports a late model Hudson sedan struck a Rock Island freight diesel locomotive at a Central Avenue crossing. Mrs. Berkness suffered severe injuries including a dislocated left knee and ankle, head injuries, and potential leg loss. Mr. Berkness had a broken nose and facial injuries. Both were taken to Holy Family hospital. the car was declared a total loss.
Witness Kenneth Hiles described a collision at a crossing where a car stalled near Centra avenue. Mrs Berkness suffered injuries when the engine pushed under the floor, striking a soft toy Darkness as the train approached from the roundhouse toward Albert Lea. The Berkness family resided northwest of Jackson and Armstrong relatives were nearby. Engineer Charles Lamb and fireman Ward Fletcher were identified on the derailed locomotive.
An official call invites Republicans to precinct caucuses at 7 30 p m Friday March 6 at the regular polling places unless altered by the precinct committeeman. Delegates from each precinct will attend the Emmetsburg county convention March 12 1948, then select delegates to the State Convention in Des Moines April 2 1948 for the national nominating convention. Precinct caucus is Friday March 5 1948.
Emmetsburg Democrat reports a wave of bad checks hitting Palo Alto area businesses. Sheriff Dick Miller seeks a woman called Rhea Hill who cashed checks of ten to fifteen dollars in Grachtinger Mallard and Weat Bend over three weeks. All fraudulent checks drawn on an Emmetsburg bank.
Sheriff cautions retailers about a rising wave of bogus check artists, describing a blonde woman about 23 who cashes checks. A colored preacher quips about donations for a cemetery fence, quelling the idea with a rural joke about the dead and living.
