James Br. Keene, prominent Wall Street figure, testifies before Commissioner Thorne Alexander about the failed Hocking Pool and the Wiske & Co. collapse. New York February 16 Charles Helke secretary of the American Sugar Refining Company known as the sugar trust stands trial starting March 1 on indictments accusing him and other employees of conspiring to defraud the government by misworded sugar imports. Attorneys had sought immunity based on testimony given before a grand jury but Judge Martin ruled no immunity exists and instructed the jury accordingly. Helke’s counsel acknowledged the admission but argued it should shield from prosecution. The government threatened immediate sentencing if immunity pleaded not sustained, but later Helke changed the plea to not guilty and trial date was set.
President Taft refuses to ask Congress for funding of military aeronautical equipment. Cortlandt Meld Bishop of the Agro Club of America and delegates from Washing ton and Baltimore urge a recommendation for army aircraft for military use. The president cites strict economy and says he cannot urge the project at this time. External note mentions Took Island Agent Acouned and other misread names.
Major Roue of Sterling is to take charge of the Des Moines River survey from Keokuk to above Des Moines. Work to begin about March 16 with no lack of funds. The effort aims to justify navigation and water power improvement, backed by congress committees and support from government officials.

Roy Bos ode, a twenty year old from Eddyville, admitted writing a black hand letter to former Representative M. Epperson demanding $2,000 under threat of exposing Manning & Hubbardton State Bank and Epperson's residence. The confession was obtained by U S Marshal Clarke and Federal Inspector A Walburn. Bos ode was bound over to the federal grand jury with $1,500 bail.
Des Moines dispatch reports the Iowa National Guard arsenal in Des Moines is too small and unsuitable for storage, provisioning, and supplies. Officers Captain Henry Dalton and Captain Frances Z. McConnell indicate a capable new building is required to accommodate growing needs and other regional requests.
William Porter theatrical magnate of Des Moines filed for probate naming his wife Leulec Auguste Foster as executrix. The will excludes inventory and estimates his wealth above 500000. He bequeaths to two brothers two sisters his mother Alice Foster Lydia Foster and Edward Millard in the business. to his wife the Des Moines homestead and estate income. to his divorced wife Loulan W Teator of New York an annuity of 1200.
Hero Uulaman of Brooklyn, jailed on Rock Island road ties, attempted suicide by leaping into the Mississippi River last Saturday. Rescued, he asked detention until transfer to the hospital for the insane. He left $19,900 in property.
Stockport Is Feb 15 The school election was decisive with outside territory 81 yes 11 no and city 20 yes 4 no, totaling 60 yes 18 no. Proceedings halted by injunction if not, district to vote on a new high school building. Proponents hire Senator W. & Allen of Birmingham and Judge J. O. Mitchell of Ottumwa. opposition hires W. M. Walker of Keosaugan.
Cedar Rapids Ja Feb 16 A T Av or millionaire president of the Cedar Rapids Gas Company died after a long illness He was a pioneer business man with investments in early Cedar Rapids industries and southern lands Some believe his breakdown followed strain from a protracted city gas company ordinance battle and a court victory for the city.

He criticizes Secretary Knox and the state department, alleging intrigues in Central America and Washington caused his downfall. He blames Butters and Garthwaite, and recalls Boer War era actions connected to his fate.
Seven crewmen on torpedo boat destroyer Hopkins suffered severe burns in an explosion that ripped the forward fire room in San Diego. Two may die. Injured men include L. B. Taylor, Pr Hunt, B. A.
