New York February 16 Charles Helke secretary of the American Sugar Refining Company known as the sugar trust stands trial starting March 1 on indictments accusing him and other employees of conspiring to defraud the government by misworded sugar imports. Attorneys had sought immunity based on testimony given before a grand jury but Judge Martin ruled no immunity exists and instructed the jury accordingly. Helke’s counsel acknowledged the admission but argued it should shield from prosecution. The government threatened immediate sentencing if immunity pleaded not sustained, but later Helke changed the plea to not guilty and trial date was set.
