New Officers Elected at Corp Meeting for Golf Club

The corporation elected Bill Voigt as president Dr Alents as vice president Bemani Elsenbast as secretary and Lloyd McCombs as treasurer. Plans include reseeding the golf course pond repairs tree plantings and a new riding greens mower to improve conditions next year. The club seeks many new members to enjoy the course.

Palo Alto County Hospital Lab Manager Passes Exam

John Dahm, manager of laboratory services, Palo Alto County Hospital, passed the Proficiency Examination for Clinical Laboratory Technologists given by the Department of HEW. The exam tests chemistry, hematology, blood bank and microbiology for those with practical experience. Dahm passed the test on his first try in fall 1976.

Head Start Program Granted Funding for Eight County Area

Upper Des Moines Opportunity Inc announces a one year federal grant of 214,594 dollars for eight county Head Start serving 180 Palo area children. The March 1 1977 to February 28 1978 period requires a 53,648 dollar local in kind match. Lois Crouch heads staff. Ben Witt oversees social services. Parents engage as volunteers and in policy council.

Head Start Policy Council Organized for 1977

The Head Start Policy Council for 1977 has been organized to aid Director Lois Crouch in program decisions. Head Start serves low income families with emphasis on health services education and social family involvement. Parents help set educational goals and enrich family life through involvement. The council includes one parent per class and a county representative from Palo Alto. Cheri Thuemling and Penny Duncan represent Palo Alto with Marian Moses as community rep and former president. Head Start operates in the Kid's Komer building Emmetsburg with staff Delores Stroud Kathy Myers Priscilla Zaugg Bess Raska and Truman Thompson. Sponsored by Upper Des Moines Opportunity Inc serving several counties. M Peter Hart is executive director Leonard Stransky chairs the governing board Lois Crouch is program director. The federally funded program serves 180 children this year though about 240 participate.

National District Attorneys Plan Forum on White Collar Crime

Roger Rook president of the National District Attorneys Association announced the National Executive Forum on Economic Crime to be held in Los Angeles the week of November 27 1977. Executives from government and private industry will join national prosecutors and law enforcement experts to chart new strategies against economic crime. The NDAA cites 40 billion dollars yearly losses impacting the elderly minorities and disadvantaged and aims to educate business leaders to prevent such crimes.

Lower speed limits save lives on rural interstates

The Iowa Department of Transportation says rural interstate fatalities hit a record low despite higher travel. Deaths per 100 million vehicle miles fell from 2.25 in 1973 to 1.17 in 1976, paralleling speed limit declines. DOT projects higher 65 mph limits would add about 136 more deaths and 23 million gallons of gasoline consumed.
