Death of W L Sloniker 69 due to heart attack
W L Sloniker, 69, died suddenly January 27 1949 at the home of his daughter Mrs Leona Duhn in Wilmington California after a brief illness that began January 17. Funeral services were at Cartwright Mortuary Wilmington and burial was in Sunnyside Mausoleum Long Beach. He formerly farmed near Graettinger Iowa and owned a service station in Chariton Iowa before moving to California. He is survived by his wife two daughters and five sons including Mrs Harold Duhn Mrs Eileen Sanders Harry Roy Charles Earl and Ralph. The Times extends condolences.

Frank Hastings at 87, longtime Palo Alto county resident and carpenter who helped build churches, died after two months illness in Emmetsburg. Born January 12 1862 in Chicago, he lived near St John cemetery since 1865. Funeral Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church officiated by Rev Prichett. Survived by wife, a son W F Hastings of Washington DC, and a daughter Mrs Asa Hankey of Osgood area. five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The Times offers sympathy.

Deer Sighting Near Graettinger Reported by Local Grower
Dan Resh observed four deer in the Wikert field northeast of Graettinger while a Times staffer joined with field glasses. A guard deer watched closely as the pair noted deer crossing roads and fences pose a driving hazard at night. Nearby traffic incidents include a Graettinger car damaged by a deer crossing the road. Ed Marxen and spouse attended a funeral in Albert Lea, Minnesota for a relative a week ago Monday.

Gruver Girls Win Grae Tiger Tourney Championship
The Gruver girls defeated Maple Hill 45 to 21 to win the Grae Tiger sectional tournament Saturday night. Cylinder beat Rodmen 84 to 29 for third place. Graettinger opened with Lake Township 24 to 21, Lois Sandvig scoring 14. Semis saw Gruver top Rodmen 43–16 and Maple Hill beat Cylinder 23–22. Attendance stayed strong despite severe winter weather. tourney manager was Mr. Manchester.
