Oscar Suss Elected Palo Alto County Farm Bureau President

Oscar Suss of Lost Island township was elected president of the Palo Alto county Farm Bureau for 1934 at the annual meeting on December 19 at the court house. Other officers for the coming year include Bernard Schroeder as vice president Henry Currans treasurer and Edward B White secretary. Highway Worker Severely Injured Clearing Snow Near Armstrong

Vestal J. Thackerey of Gilmore Minnesota was struck by an automobile at 4 pm yesterday near Gerled while his snow plow blocked a lane. He suffered compound fractures to both legs and severe injuries to a hand with probable internal damage. he was taken to Coleman hospital then Estherville after emergency treatment in Armstrong. The crash occurred in blinding snow as Thackerey warned approaching traffic.

Mrs. Bert Masters suffered a stroke Wednesday morning at ten o'clock. She is unconscious and in very serious condition. Friends of the family hope for an early improvement and her restoration to health and strength.

Chimney Fire at Luke Farm North of Grachtinger

Fire company rushed to the Albert Luke farm home north east of Grachtinger to extinguish a very large chimney fire described as one of the worst the local firemen had seen. No major damage to the Lake home aside from scorched pine. Dale Noble is collector for the Iowa Public Service Co in Grachtinger and arrangements were made to pay electric light and power bills at Frick Drug Store.

First Lutheran Ladies Aid Plans Self Denial Meeting

Social items record the First Lutheran Ladies Aid society scheduling a Self Denial meeting at Mrs Rasmussen's home on Wednesday January 3 1934. Invitations extended to all members and associates for an orderly, cordial gathering. A separate item notes a Surprise Christmas Party at the Nunamaker residence for Ell wool Nunamaker with games refreshments and a cheerful evening. Santa Claus made an appearance and distributed gifts among the young guests at the Jensen home during a Christmas party hosted by Valois Ann Jensen with a six thirty start and festive fare.

First Snow On Christmas Day Grips Iowa

Winter weather brought ten below start and five inches of snow Christmas morning. A double dose Tuesday lowered to twenty below zero before moderating to near zero. Two Iowans died from the cold and an auto crash claimed a life.

Clarence W Hanson and Laura L Sundahl were married in Estherville on Sunday December 22. The couple, both from Ruthven, plan to live on a Ruthven area farm. Laura is well known in Graettinger where her family lived before moving to Ruthven, and friends extend hearty good wishes for happiness.

Tragedy in Scranton as train strikes Jacobson family

At Scranton Iowa a Christmas night collision with a Northwestern train killed John GC Jacobson 60 and his wife. Their son John, a University of Town student, was fatally injured. The Jacobsons were returning from a Charter Oak family reunion.

Eli Schneider of West Bend 29, married with an eighteen month old child, died by self inflicted gunshot in a lane near his father's Garfield township farm on a Saturday afternoon. His body was found by his father after 3 pm. Coroner and Sheriff ruled death by own action with no motive evident. He is survived by wife, child, and father.

Santa Claus Visits Graettlinger Delights Local Children

Last Saturday Santa Claus visited Graettlinger and nearby areas, bringing 500 sacks of candy for the boys and girls. The supply quickly ran out, prompting a quick restock with candy bars for children who did not receive a sack. Santa vows a larger supply next year.

Card Party At Woodman Hall Cancelled

A H Cameron Taken To Hospital After Illness

A H Cameron was taken to Estherville hospital for treatment after an attack of pneumonia. Doctors planned to tap a lung if needed and take an x ray before any operation. Friends express regret. Cameron underwent an operation to clear a lung and rested easily as his condition improved.
