The town marks its 67th Labor Day with shifting attitudes as entertainment shifts and youth age bring changes. Earlier events in 1938 included speeches and dances, while this year features stage shows, horse and grain exhibits, teen dance, hill climb, cinema, and kiddies carnival days amid milder public disorder.
The Times notes both gubernatorial candidates will speak at the Labor Day celebration on Monday September 5. Governor Kraschel was first slated for 8 p.m. then Attorney George Wilson of Des Moines, the Republican nominee, was added to address the crowd. A sports feature.
Directory lists Immaculate Conception and Bethel Lutheran churches with pastors, plus Methodist Grace Baptist and Immanuel Lutheran. It also names Graettinger organizations including Businessmen and Woman's Club presidents, Lewion Auxiliary, Lions Club, American Legion, Library officials and personnel.
The coming celebration features a boxing show sponsored by the American Legion with free acts described as the best ever for a Labor Day in Graettinger. The piece extols the mail system with the motto that the mail must go through in all conditions from plains swamps and streams to trains trucks and air routes. It urges a moral equivalent of carrying the mail in all duties undertaken in God's name and praises plain devotedness to duty.
An order from the United States Food administration directs that all loose grain on fields and between fields and threshing machines be gathered. Men must haul grain from fields and collect loose bundles to prevent waste and ensure safe handling.
