The Graettinger Midgets and Mites opened the Junior Lakes League playoffs Friday night with the Mites defeating Ocheyedan 6-0 and the Midgets beating Lake Park 7-1. Graettinger Mites scored five unearned runs as Ron Baedke limited hitters through five innings.
Grac ttinger Mites clinch undisputed first with an 11-1 victory over Sibley, while the Midgets follow with a 12-1 win at Sibley. Landing allowed one hit in relief as Lake Park matched late pressure but could not convert. Bruce Gjerde and Brian Petersen starred defensively for Grac ttinger, with solid mound work from Dave Sandvig.
Spies and Levi Holsteins topped the Northwest Iowa District Holstein show at Spencer winning junior championships in senior yearling heifer and senior yearling bull classes. Brand champion bull by Spies and Leln. grand champion cow named Spices Carnation Jolene Ace. Norman Olson of Wallingford took first place two year old bull and second place heifer calf. Top 4-H heifers shown by Ron Jorgensen, Ron Chapman of Ruthven, and Misa Olson of Wallingford, all receiving plaques from Spies and Levi.
Mrs. Allen Baker of Arnolds Park renewed her Milford Mall subscription, marking 57 years of subscriptions from her family, either directly or through her late parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Griswold. The note highlights long-standing reader continuity tied to the Griswold lineage.
Wool growers of Palo Alto county have already received 20126.42 in Incentive payments for wool sold in the marketing year ending March 31 1956. Based on county ASC applications the total payments to county wool growers were 20126.42 for the last marketing year. Chairman Brodersen cited a national average price of 42.8 cents per pound for the year. The average payment to wool growers equates to 44.9 percent of the price received, with payments based on 44.90 for every 100 received for wool. A prior referendum left deductions of one cent per pound on wool and five cents per hundredweight on slaughter animals to fund a wool promotion program. Applications for incentive payments for the current wool marketing year should be filed with the county ASC office after sales.
Results tabulated at the Palo Alto county 4-H and PFA fair last week show top 4-H entrants Jack Garretts of Silver Lake with 168 points and Willard Florke of Walnut with 150 points. Top FFA score was Richard Jurgens of Weat Bend with 153 points.
Bob Reeves and Al Fatining top Graettinger points totals with 164 to 180 and 190 possible. The FBYP scores show Fatining achieving 164 of 190 while Reeves nets 13 of 180. Subscription reminder appears as a separate line urging renewal.
