Parisians Get First War Shoes Repairs After 1940
About twenty five thousand Parisians, in worn and torn footwear since the war, are receiving their first half soles and new heels since 1940 through a Salvation Army shoe repair project. The Army sent 500 repair kits to France, each kit fixing up to 60 pairs, including leather soles, heels, patching materials, a hammer and knife. Paris cobblers volunteer to help in the Armee du Salut welfare effort, serving long lines of French men, women and children seeking free repairs as shortages and high prices persist for new shoes.
