World’s Only Eight String Violin Made by Nels Peterson
Nels Peterson, 67, of High Lake, Emmet County, may own the only eight string violin in the world. Handcrafted from maple back and spruce top with cedar case, the instrument reflects Peterson’s lifelong hobby of violin making, wood carving, and Indian relic collecting. He has built about ten such violins, most kept locally, with tone praised as equal to commercial violins. Peterson, a former blacksmith, suffers rheumatism and arthritis, limiting his craft but keeping his unique craft alive alongside his lake shore homestead relics and family history.
