A Philadelphia newspaper recalls John Wanamaker or a similar surname who ran a dry goods store selling socks for 39 cents. He spent 86 dollars with the Ledger to advertise once and failed, losing nearly all goods. Merchants warned him advertising wouldn’t pay, yet sympathy led to poor outcomes as his business expanded in error. The piece also notes a new atlas published jointly by Northern Pacific, Burlington Route, and Great Northern Railway, detailing state statistics and geography for a dollar.
The Reel Island System offers a fare rate and one third on certificate plan from all points in Iowa for the Iowa Christian Bodeavyor State Convention in Newton from August 25 to 27. Call your nearest ticket agent for full information.
The Grand Army special train to Denver under Rock Island System departs September 4 with Capt. H. M. Pick of Des Moines in charge.
