Labor Day in Graettinger Iowa a Century Ago
A historical sketch recalls Graettinger Iowa turning from a rural railroad town to a community shaping Labor Day as an annual gathering. It notes early picnic origins in 1896 at Wells farm and Tipp farm, moving west of the Des Moines River to Flannery Grove, and evolving into a statewide social event. It highlights Old Settlers registers begun in 1912, notable events like bicycle races, balloon ascents, boxing, dances, theatre shows, and the shift from picnics to fairs with games, rodeos, and parades. The piece credits Margeret George Johnson and various locals for compiling the history and preserves memories from Sam Watson, Mrs E S George, and others.
