The Emmetsburg Democrat reporter Mary Knudson earned a prize for a feature piece about the wife of a local jeweler who taught the Ween's bride, Mrs Allen Barkley, with the story published last fall on the eve of the vice president's marriage.
Storm Lake Pilot Tribune notes Mrs Knudson won first prize at the spring town convention of press women. It credits Mrs Knudson for assisting her husband Gilbert Knudson and Tom Kelly in publishing two newly issued newspapers at Emmetsburg. Neighborly congratulations from the paper.
A Rolfe farmer was found with 1500 pounds of sugar stored in an attic, likely to last years unless ants raid it. The piece plays on sugar and whiskey hoarding as a joke on hoarders, noting Cuba’s sugar supply and Truman’s large import quota to handle the 1950 bumper surplus.
