Cancer Month Promotes Early Detection and Treatment

March Unemployment Payments Reach Record Iowa Total

March unemployment insurance payments in Iowa totaled 720 800 dollars the highest monthly total since March 1939 the employment security commission reported. The commission also paid veterans 676 500 dollars under the readjustment act bringing total payments to 1 897 800 dollars for unemployed Iowa workers. For the first three months of 1949 unemployment insurance payments totaled 1 526 300 dollars and 1 698 in veterans benefits.

Iowa Fur Take Fails To Break Million Mark In 1948 49

Iowa trappers failed to hit the million dollar threshold in 1948-49 as fur values totaled 737 577 22. About 276 021 fur animals were trapped, up from 166 366 last year, aided by musk rat seasons opened widely. Average fur values declined, reflecting weaker markets. Other notes include new fishing licenses for 1949 50 and a Red Oak farmer tradition, plus a tiny elephant herd in Rock Valley and a three yolked egg in Sac City, and inventor Osterhaus receiving a patent for a small tractor.
