A survey of about 60 state safety officials shows a consensus against high speeds. They oppose fast driving on modern roads, favor speed control programs and statutory limits, and doubt the public can judge safe speeds. They suggest 60 mph day and 50 mph night on main roads, and 60–65 mph on highways, with personal caution at 60 mph.
