A Grabill area notice lists local youths eligible for the first U.S. draft drawing. Names unfold by draft and register numbers with many expected to await a potential second draw.
Berne clergyman Rev Sem Grabill spent the latter part of last week greeting friends and neighbors, enjoying casual chats and community greetings in town.
Local classifieds note multiple sales offerings from Grabill and nearby areas. Items include a Little Daley fly shuttle weaving loom outfit, an 8 horsepower Thor motorcycle, a 11-year-old work horse, two 16 month old heifers, a registered French draft stallion, plus two second hand mowers and hay loaders. Also advertised are oils from W. W. Hattley & Co and wagon bargains from W. B. & J. Klopfenstein. Elizabeth Glaesman and A. Blume are listed sellers.
The Mennonite Church lists Sunday services including Sunday School at 9 00 and 10 00, a preaching service, young people's meeting, and an evening preaching service. Prayer meeting is Wednesday at 7 30 with Pastor Aaron Souder.
Mrs. B J Schlatter dies at 11 20 PM at home west of Lao age 59 following five year illness Born October 11 1857 in Haroe Co Ohio she lived on a farm near Lee Married 1877 to Benjamin J Schlatter they had nine children two died earlier Survived by husband and children Frank J Christena August D Lusan Caroline Lester and George Nine grandchildren Funeral Sunday 10 AM at Leo M E Church Rev E M Foster officiating Interment Leo Cemetery
Allen county commissioners report Wabash Railroad raked Butler division to eight percent grade creating hazards at Grable North River Doty Maysville and Notestine crossings. Noah Johnson failed to appear for a conference. board will press to restore proper grade and pursue action until safety is achieved.
Because a suitable room could not be secured at Grabill the canning demonstration will be held tomorrow in the domestic science room at the Leo high school building.
The Quartermaster General plans forty new Bakery Companies plus ten existing ones in the Continental U S 52 units total Nos 5 and 6 in Honolulu and the Philippine Islands Personnel include officers and enlisted men with specified pay and meals lodging and clothing furnished Equipment is Army Field Bakery No 1 oven per unit with six men to supply 1800 men daily Fifteen units form a Bakery Company capable of 40000 pounds bread daily Vacancies exist for Sergeants Bakers Corporals and officer commissions Promising young men with high school education can enlist learn the trade and seek promotion to non commissioned and commissioned ranks Commissioners will be offered to worthy men from the ranks
As of interest gathered from nearby towns, Prof and Mrs C G Pepe of Os sian Ind spent Sunday with the latter's parents H L Moody and wife. Enos Byers is numbered with the plek. Paul, son of Stephan Shear and wife, ran a needle into his knee last week. G Tonkel and family were Harlan callers Saturday. E E Paff and family of Ft Wayne spent Wednesday with his brother Lyell and wife. R R Shoaff and wife of Ft Wayne spent Sunday with the former's parents D W Shoaf and wife. L H McNutt of Mayhew Chapel called on Chas Blume last Friday. Mrs Ward Hall of Ft Wayne spent last week with G Kimes and family. Friends of Geo Barr welcomed him at home for his birthday. A number from this vicinity attended the funeral of Mrs B J Schlatter at Leo Sunday. J A Popp and wife were Leo callers Thursday evening.

Ap pearance of genial townsman Al P Smith on our streets last Monday marks his first return since several weeks of illness. Mrs Elizabeth Hursh visited her grandson J M Hursh and family Saturday. Mrs J H Fitagevale and children of Ft Wayne visited F D Hellinger’s family over the weekend. E E Hardisty and wife of Ft Wayne spent days with L C Paff and wife. Local farmers are busy making hay.
Postmaster E C Martz received instruction from the chief railway mail clerk at Toledo Ohio to load mail on eastbound train No 64 arriving Grabill at 518 PM, marking the first time the new arrangement was used. Going forward, patrons may send mail on that train. evening southbound service remains unchanged.
The church lists 9:00 Sunday School 10:00 preaching 7:10 Young People 7:45 evening preaching. Thursday prayer meeting led by Pastor Henry Roth. Also a Wanted notice inviting buyers and sellers to name items.
Parties wanting to sell straw are advised to phone A Neuenschwander & Co Grab or Leo at 2-13 for arrangements.
A notice in the Review mentions on pages two and three a complete list of numbers drawn at Washington in the effective draft lottery. The item also references local residents visiting others and a window display at W. W. Hartley and Co. with a steel range.
