Davenport stockholders announce independent Clinton township line to Goshen with a toll station to open by November. Jacob Zollinger cites high fees from Home and Bell exchanges and says local subscribers prefer direct Davenport connections despite added cost.
An Indianapolis dispatch reports Judge J. H. Baker of oral court is expected back this week after a summer vacation. He is in good health and nearing retirement age, but intends to stay longer if health holds. The court will resume once he returns.
Burt Knapp, the Ligonier jockey, wins fresh laurels as American trainers invade Russia to race between Moscow and Warsaw. The fall season features horses running miles in 1:38 or faster, with Americans placing in top positions across major events.
Eugene Dilley of Lagrange, a Trafalgar educator, was located with a fractured skull after two months missing. He left home July 5 with a large sum of money and cannot explain his wanderings, authorities suspect highwaymen and foul play.
Mrs Minnie Robinson of Elrod was killed by her father F A Rheam while acting as peacemaker in a quarrel with her husband over board pay. The husband from St Louis visited as the dispute escalated and Rheam fired at him but struck Minnie instead.

Invitations announce the marriage of Ada Bridge of Elkhart to Philip J Mahn of the city. The ceremony will take place at the bride's sister Carrie Stevens Bridge home at 208 Michigan street Elkhart on the evening of October 2. Ada is a well known local resident. Philip owns tensorial parlors near the post office. A second street house is furnished for their occupation early in October.
The Kizers of Des Moines have arrived for business with Walker, Lewis & Osborn Carriage Co. and have closed arrangements to serve as general traveling representatives for the company in Iowa. The trio, N. B. Kizer and sons John W. and Bert, are well known in the state and expect to handle at least one thousand Walker jobs in the coming year.
James McCurdy of Dublin Indiana returns to Goshen to see old friends from the 20th Indiana Infantry at his former Third and Washington Street home. He left Goshen in 1869 to live in Kansas and notes many changes and missing acquaintances.
James C. Fletcher of the Thirteenth District Democratic Committee mails a challenge to Walter Brown of the Republicans for a series of joint debates between Frank E. Hering and A. L. Brick. Debates to be held in each county seat including Elkhart and Mishawaka with equal speaking time and no personal attacks. Hering to cancel conflicting dates for Brick’s convenience. September 16, 1902.
The city retail clerks held a reorganization meeting in the council room with about seventy five attendees. Officers elected include President L J Kohler Vice President Edward Nymeyer Secretary Rufus Moyer Treasurer Ike Jacobse and Trustees Charles Gibson John Naylor and W R Bauer. Committees were named to arrange quarters and the group plans to affiliate with the International Retail Clerks Union. another meeting is set for next Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Mary Rutledge of Detroit recovered her seven year old daughter in Fort Wayne after a four week hunt across the central states. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shamblin, both from Detroit, were arrested there for hotel bill default and petit larceny. They were with a girl they claimed as a niece and had been teaching her song and dance. The child feared recognizing her mother.
Wallace W Williamson editor of the Columbia City Mail and postmaster faces two indictments from the Whitley county grand jury. One accuses him of false affidavit about liquor license notice dates, the other cites auditor's office records. A warrant was issued and he is under arrest.
A man posing as a soap house agent sells casto nes for eight dollars per box in St. Joe county. He promises a carpet for any room or a set of dishes with the purchase. Several buyers have paid for soap but none have received the promised carpet or dishes, raising suspicion about his representations.
Report says William Jennings Bryan will address a LaPorte audience before heading home to Nebraska after appearances with Cleveland mayor Tom L. Johnson who challenges Senator Mark Hanna. An Elkhart lodge cites a carnival that cleared about 1,900 dollars of a projected 5,000.
Battle Creek Moon reports no absolute identification for James H. Hayden killed by cars in Ligonier Indiana. Police work with undertaker to locate relatives, then learn Hayden was a traveling showman and hunchback. Also notes Long Finish trip by James Wallace and Earl Parson who paddled 1200 miles Chicago to New York in 34 days aboard a 13 foot boat.
Indianapolis waiters push for reduced shifts and better wages amid reports of 16 hour days for four dollars weekly. The Waiters' Union denounces tipping, arguing it erodes dignity and creates a double levy on patrons. The union predicts a nationwide war on tipping and likely abolition within a year.
Elkhart Electric Co installs a thirty arc light system to allow round the clock progress on the Hen Island dam. About 250 workers are currently engaged as the system is expected to be finished by next week.

Eugene Cowles leaves light opera for concert and vaudeville. Mrs. Leslie Carter opens the Balasco Sept 20 with Da Barry. Ethel Barrymore to star in The Country Mouse and Carrots under Charles Frohman. A Poor Relation runs again at the Irwin. Frank Keenan introduced Noah Vaie years ago. Horace G Lewis, once Edmund Dantes, stars but with weak support audiences. Lewis recalls Goshen visit in curtain speech after act two.

Death of Mrs Emma Dentz in Elkhart at age 44 leaves four children. A benegt for Robert Raatz of Conn Trumpet Notes band is planned as his family battles illness. A trolley route now covers New York to Boston with two gaps soon closed and fare total of 2.96 dollars.
In Charlevoix Kansas a ceremony united Miss Mary McVitty of the North Side with Eugene Stutz of Middlebury formerly of the E. W. Walker and Btutz Co. The couple, both well known in the county, were married on Sunday and plan to reside in Middlebury after returning home next week.
Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway prices offer a Boston round trip on October 7 through 11 with return by October 13 without deposit or by November 12 with deposit. Leas and Galbreath announce a grand opening with a large millinery exhibit drawn from New York Indianapolis Cleveland and Chicago. A theater party honors Messrs Kizer of Des Moines with a large group including Lewis families and others leaving for the West. Goshen residents Mr and Mrs John Belt welcome a daughter and Lank Stiver becomes a grandfather. Barbers Union rumors of a price cut circulate as Mennonite conference crowds head to Nappanee.
