French forces advance further in occupied territory amid diminishing German resistance near Cambrai. Reports indicate continued gains for the French with the possibility of German withdrawal from the Cambrai area.
Allied forces on a broad front from the Aisne to Cambrai pushed German positions back last night and today. The British advanced more than 15 miles on the northern sector, targeting the Cambrai area and Havricourt wood. French troops reportedly gained about two miles along a 20 mile front south of the Somme and seized the town of Tergnier near the front.
Max Miller arrived in Chicago at 7 05 last evening with the first aerial mail from New York. He was greeted by a large crowd in Grant park near a war exhibit. Edw Gardner, pilot of the second plane, landed at Westville at 7 20. The flyers followed the Wabash railroad from Millersburg to Chicago, observed by Goshen residents about 5 30 yesterday afternoon.
Tomorrow second motorless Sunday under Fuel Admin Garfield. Only cars with county council of defense permits may operate. Permits $0.25 to cover issuing costs. In Indianapolis a big raid on gamblers led to arrest of William Armitage and Gustave G. Schmidt, a city council member and movie house owner, on gambling house charges. Armitage fined $100.
Edmund P Maes of Laporte and Lawrence died in France of wounds received while serving with U S troops. The Jewish new year was observed today.
German aviators scored two direct hits on the large Red Cross hospital between the wings of the French American hospital southwest of Soissons. There were no casualties as patients had already been moved to nearby caves when the bombing began soon after dark.

German army headquarters reported that on the heights northeast of Fismes in the Vesle river region, German forces repulsed renewed American attacks yesterday. The official notice was issued today.
Capt Harrison led his men over the top and was killed at the second battle of the Marne on July 18. Walter Tammer of Roanoke Indiana was wounded, one leg blown off, after witnessing Harrison’s death. Tammer later died of wounds, five others killed and three wounded by the same shell. Tammer is in an eastern hospital after being returned to the United States.
Dr A Inks and companions H J Rickert Bernard Uline and Harold Johnson of Nappanee return from a fishing trip along the Flambeau River in northern Wisconsin. The party reports bass pike and muskellunge in abundance and Inks calls the Flambeau River the Mecca of America for anglers. Mrs George Bare dies of peritonitis at the Walter Kegg farm near Ligonier. Burial held in Topeka today.
A fire damaged a flat building in Elkhart owned by Frank J. Weiler. Loss estimated at 3500 dollars.

The Right Rev Francis Silas Chatard bishop of the Indianapolis diocese died in Indianapolis after a long illness. Born December 13 1834 in Baltimore he studied in Rome and led the American college there later heading the institution. Named American bishop by Pope Leo XIII in 1878 he served in Vincennes before the current diocese. He suffered paralysis in 1899 and lived in retirement until his death.
