Reuters reporter at British HQ in France says Germans bombed an American hospital on the French coast, killing one army medical corps officer and wounding three officers. The hospital served St. Louis and Harvard contingents in a coastal town. two enlisted men were killed and 16 wounded, five of them Americans. War Department in Washington reports no information yet.
UDINE Italy Sept 7 About 30 000 Austrians have been taken as prisoners up to now by Italians in the last offensive. Total Austrian losses are estimated at about 120 000. The Austrian counter attacks before Trieste appear abandoned and a defense campaign has begun.
The Department of Agriculture issued forecasts for the principal U S crops based on September 1 conditions in 1917. Spring wheat 250 million bushels, all wheat 660 million bushels, corn 3 248 million bushels, oats 1 532 billion bushels.
Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor, was unanimously elected president of the American Alliance For Labor and Democracy in Minneapolis. The group was formed to unite labor behind the U.S. government and deter disloyalist activities.

The Red Cross names Mrs. H. F. Beery of North Main Street to oversee clothing for French babies. With 150,000 fatherless children in need and clothing in short supply, residents can call 797 or bring usable outfits to Red Cross rooms over Spillman and Zimmerly's on Wednesday Thursday or Friday.
A. W. Kohler formerly of Millersburg has sold his Hannibal hotel and has moved to Quincy HL. He is now connected with the St James hotel.

Tommy Y, famed chestnut pacing stallion owned by Joe Wysong north of Columbia City, died at the Wysong farm at age 22. Sired by Ontonian, he raced fast early, with a 1:04 half mile at two and a Fort Wayne race mark of 2:124. He declined to be sold at multiple offers and left a line of famous colts including Leon and Ina V. He began failing this summer and died after being led to an orchard.
